Elgin Public, Pope John Students Earn NVC Art Awards

Elgin Public and Elgin Pope John students were awarded judge's merit ribbons at the 2014 Niobrara Valley Conference Art Show last week.

Jordan Dietz, a senior at Elgin Public, earned a judge's merit award for his black and white artwork. Junior high EPS students receiving the special recognition were: Kira Widger, colored drawing and sculpture; Emma Kerkman, colored drawing; Vada Kruse, sculpture; Lydia Behnk, sculpture and printmaking; and Myranda Palmer, sculpture and print-making.

Pope John High School student Jordan Mescher was awarded a judge's merit for her sculpture of a lamb. Heather Bauer, a Pope John eighth grader, received the honor for her miscellaneous piece titled "Ribbbon." 

A total of 1,850 pieces of artwork from grades 7-12 were on display in the St. Mary's School gym on Friday. Students representing 18 area schools featured pieces in the show:  Chambers, Clearwater-Orchard, Elgin, Elkhorn Valley, Ewing, Keya Paha, Lynch, Neligh-Oakdale, Niobrara, Pope John, Rock County, Saint Mary’s , Santee, Stuart, Verdigre, West Boyd, West Holt, and Wheeler Central.

The day of the art show students attended the art activity of “Creating Art on the Ipad” taught by Keya Paha art teacher Joan Swim with her students assisting.

The judges for this year’s art show were Kevin McNichols of O’Neill and Diane Cole of Emmett for the high school, and Teri Schacht of Orchard for the junior high. Next year's show will be in Ewing.
