Elgin Priest To Begin 195-Mile Fundraising Walk Tomorrow

An Elgin priest will begin an ambitious 195-mile walk tomorrow morning to raise funds for a gym project.

Fr. Ross Burkhalter, pastor at St. Boniface Church, plans to begin his journey in Valentine early Tuesday morning and continue on the Cowboy Trail until he reaches Norfolk. He intends to reach his destination sometime next weekend. 

According to the St. Boniface website, Fr. Burkhalter has received nearly $17,000 in pledges, bringing the total donations to nearly $119,888, as of May 5. Supporters have been working since December to raise the $250,000 needed for asbestos removal in the gymnasium's ceiling.

Different levels of donations have been set up, from "ground squirrel" to "bald eagle,"  pledging 25 cents per mile to $1.00 per mile. Set donation amounts are also welcome.
