Elgin Holds Last Splash At Old Pool

Last night was the Elgin Pool’s Last Splash.

The annual pool party marks the end of another fun summer.

However, this year it also marks the end of old pool.

When the pool reopens for the season next Memorial Day Weekend, the community expects to be using new facilities.

The new pool, which will be located in the same space as the current pool, will boast some new features.

“It will have a zero depth entry,” said Vicki Miller. “The bath house will be handicap accessible, and the pool will also be handicap accessible.”

The new pool will also have a new and improved old favorites, such as a diving board, slide, and even a toddler slide, funds permitting.

With the old pool being over 60 years old and losing water daily, the idea for a new pool came up three years ago.

“We were originally going to revamp it and that didn’t work out,” said Miller. So the city adjusted their plans and decided that an entirely new pool would be best.  

The funds for the pool came partially from an estate donated to the city, and partially bond which the city put up for the election.

“We had an estate leave us about 500,000 and then the city put it up for election and the bond passed for another 500,000 and the rest we’re still raising.”

The community was so excited about the project, Miller said, that the bond passed with 97% approval. ​
