Elgin Fire Department Responds To Fire Near Raeville

A ditch fire near Raeville was quickly put out thanks to the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department.

At approximately 8:00 p.m., the Elgin Fire Dept. responded to a grass fire in a ditch northwest of Raeville in Antelope County. The strong winds and the dry conditions brought the possibility of the situation turning dangerous, but the fire department was quickly able to contain and extinguish the fire.

According to Elgin Fire Chief Jim Kittleson, the fire was started after a wire with loose insulation shorted against a transformer on a power pole due to the strong winds. The sparks that resulted from the short fell to the ground where it ignited the dry grass below.
