The Cyclone boys won the Class D State Powerlifting Championships and the girls were named runner up on Saturday.

The Orchard School was the site of the 2014 Class D High School State Powerlifting Championships. Sixteen Clearwater-Orchard Cyclone lifters competed.

"What an amazing day of lifting competition!" Jeff Shabram said. "This was the largest Class D State Powerlifting meet (84 entries) since the 2005 state meet which was hosted by Diller-Odell High School."

Shabram said Class D high school lifters from around the state traveled to Orchard to compete Saturday.  Schools traveled from as far west as Maxwell High School and as far south as Johnson-Brock High School.

"All O-C lifters had impressive performances setting numerous personal bests," he said. "The Cyclone boys dominated the field of competitors and were crowned Class D State Champions for the second straight year while the small, but mighty, girls’ team earned the Class D state runner-up trophy."

The Cyclones co-ed team (a mix of the top boys and girls lifters) also earned a state championship.

The boys’ teams final standings… 1st place Clearwater-Orchard (83 points); 2nd place Boyd County (20 pts); 3rd place McCool Junction (16 pts); 4th place Stuart; 5th place Silver Lake; 6th place Maxwell; 7th place Johnson-Brock; 8th place Ewing; 9th place Heartland Lutheran; 10th place (tie) Brady, Wheeler Central, and Cross County.

The girls’ teams final standings:  1st Boyd County (64 points); 2nd place Clearwater-Orchard (37 points); 3rd place (tie) Heartland Lutheran (20) and Cross County (20); 5th place (tie) Brady and Johnson-Brock; 7th place Clarkson; 8th place Wheeler Central.

The Co-ed teams final standings:  1st place Clearwater-Orchard (85 points); 2nd place Boyd County (61); 3rd place Heartland Lutheran (25); 4thplace (tie) Johnson-Brock and Cross County; 6th place Brady; 7th place Wheeler Central.

Clearwater-Orchard had 7 individual state champions in their respective weight classes.  Girls champions… Kaci Schacht and Cassie Steskal.  Heaven Smith and Jaiden Switzer finished with silver medals in their respective weight classes, and Faith Woslager earned a bronze medal.  Boys individual state champions were Seth Lampert (123 lb class), Arnulfo Salas (132 lb class), Spencer Volden (148 lb class), Jordan Volden (198 lb class), Mark Patrick (242 lb class).  Mason Siems (114 lb class), Brandon Aguilar (123 lb class), Justin Allemang (148 lb class), and Orlando Roman (220 lb class) were silver medalists in their respective weight classes.  Jacob Tabbert was a bronze medalist in the 132 lb class, and Lane Woslager finished 7th in the 181 lb class.

Spencer Volden was crowned the outstanding male lifter of the meet after weighing in at 144 pounds and lifting a total of 915 lbs Senior Jordan Volden also earned special recognition after earning his fourth straight state powerlifting meet medal which was his second straight gold medal at the state meet.

The final powerlifting meet of the season will be the Orchard AAU Powerlifting Meet Saturday, April 5 at the Orchard School gym. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.

"The talents of both the high school and middle school O-C girls and boys lifters will be on display for the home crowd along with many other lifters from around the Midwest (not just Nebraska) including the professionals from Lincoln and Omaha again," Shabram said. "The gym will be rocking in two weeks!"
