'Glory Days' Planned In Clearwater For New Year's Eve

The newly chartered Sons of the American Legion want you to relive your Glory Days on New Year's Eve - and help them raise money for their new sign. But that's just one of several events planned by the Clearwater organization.

The Sons of the Legion recently purchased a sign for the American Legion that will be used to advertise community events. The sign and installation is about $2,500, and commander Kelly Kerkman said the organization is hoping their events puts a dent in that, as well as other American Legion expenses.

The group is planning a Husker Spaghetti Feed on Saturday, Dec. 27, and a New Year's Eve party on Wednesday, Dec. 31. The free-will spaghetti feed will begin at 6 p.m. with the Husker game aired at the Legion at 7 p.m.

The New Year's Glory Days event will be from 7 p.m. until 1 a.m. at the Legion with people encouraged to dig out clothes from their glory days. There will be karaoke, games and door prizes every half hour, beginning at 7:30 p.m. No minors will be admitted.

Members are now selling luminarias in honor of loved ones remembered - not just military family members - for $25 each. At 12:30 a.m., members will light Chinese lanterns for every luminaria purchased and let them go on Main Street. 

Breakfast will be served at 12:30 a.m. with a free-will offering. Kerkman said the Sons of the Legion are hoping to make the New Year's celebration and annual event in Clearwater.


"We've had a tremendous reaction from people with our events," Kerkman said. "It's been great for the community, and the turnouts have been fantastic."


Kerkman said the Legion bar, which is called "The Bunker," is open Thursday and Saturday evenings, as well as after all home ball games.
