Cyclones Split In Home Opener; Boys Remain Undefeated

The Clearwater-Orchard basketball teams split in their home opener against Chambers-Wheeler Central on Friday night. The boys team claimed a 55-38 win while the girls dropped a 60-32 decision.

In the boys game, the Cyclones used a big third quarter to take hold of the game. Clearwater-Orchard was down 25-21 at the half outscored the Renegades 21-7 in the third. 

Senior Trevor Mlnarik led the team with 25 points while classmate Andy Kerkman scored a double-double with 14 points and 18 rebounds (16 defensively). Kerkman also blocked four shots.

Brenden Pelster led Chamber-Wheeler Central with 10 points.

In the girls game, the Cyclones shot 30 percent, led by Kinzly Macke's 14 points. Macke put together a double-double with 11 rebounds. Kylie Thiele added eight points and two steals.

Chambers-Wheeler Central was led by Jacie Laaetsch and Marissa Koenig, who had 16 points each. As a team, the Renegades shot 67 percent from the floor.

The Cyclones girls (0-2) will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 9, when they host Boyd County (1-0). The boys (2-0) will play Niobrara-Verdigre (0-2) on the road Friday, Dec. 12.
