Cyclones Edge Out Perkins County, Advance To Quarterfinals

The Cyclones took to the road Wednesday to take on the No. 2 Perkins County Plainsmen in a thrilling win of 38-36.

The Plainsmen were the first on the board leading the Cyclones 6-0. The Cyclones picked up their first lead of the game in the second quarter with a 4 yard touchdown pass and two point conversion. 

There were multiple touchdowns by both teams in the second quarter, including a fumble recovery in the end zone by O-C’s Alex Olivan. Cyclones trailed 28-14. Just before halftime, Riley Snider returned a kick 70 yards for a touchdown, closing the gap 36-22.

Neither team scored heading into the fourth quarter, but the Cyclones turned it around. Zach Martin had a ten yard run for a touchdown with a PAT. Then with 16 seconds to play the Cyclones scored, tying the game at 36-36. The two point conversion would decide the game and the Cyclones came out on top winning the game by two points.

Quarterback Zach Martin had 285 passing yards for the day. The team had 98 total tackles for the day. Andy Kerkman had 18 total tackles and Alex Olivan had 16. 

The 7-3 Cyclones will advance to the quarterfinals and play EPPJ in Elgin at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a chance at the state title.
