Three Local Students Earn 'Help Your Neighbor Award'

The family of Jim Miller presented an award in his memory to students from schools in Antelope County who go out of their way to help others.

The “Help Your Neighbor Award” was created in honor of the neighbors and family members who stepped up during Jim’s illness and after his death to help with the farm and harvest. Patricia Miller, the wife of Jim Miller and one of the creators of the “Help Your Neighbor Award”, says that the family was and continues to be extremely grateful to these kinds of people, who did these deeds from the kindness of their hearts. That spirit has continued through the winter and into the spring, and the blessings that the community continues to pour out is incredible.

The award is given to a student from Elgin Public, Pope John, and Neligh-Oakdale. The students selected were nominated by their teachers and help others without being asked. The award does not go off of grade point average or involvement in extra-curricular activities. The award only goes off of the helpful and friendly traits of the student selected.

This year’s recipients of the “Help You Neighbor Award” are:
Elgin Public: Nick Iburg
Pope John: Justin Funk
Neligh-Oakdale: Simon Beacom

​The award committee presented $100 to each student who received the award. The family hopes to continue the award every year in the spring for as long as the memorial funds remain.
