Students Participate In County Government Day On Thursday

Seven area schools participated in the annual County Government Day in Neligh on Thursday.

Students from Neligh-Oakdale, Clearwater, Orchard, Elkhorn Valley, Elgin Public, Pope John and Plainview learned more about the duties of our elected officials. They were sworn in by Judge Donna Farrell Taylor at the Antelope County Courthouse before shadowing their chosen officials.

Those who picked a court-related position participated in a mock trial in the courtroom, which included a defendant, witnesses, attorneys, judge, court reporter and jurors. In the case of "Billy the Kid," the defendant was found guilty of minor in possession and was sentenced to pay a fine of $300, plus $50 court costs and his license was impounded for 30 days.
