Petition Started To Change Nebraska's New License Plates

Although Nebraska's new license plates won't be implemented until 2017, a petition has already been started to change the sower-themed plates.

J.T. Hardwick started an online petition directed toward Gov. Pete Ricketts and member of the Nebraska Legislature. As of Monday morning, it already had more than 4,000 supporters. 

According to the petition, "People see license plates each and every day they travel. These seemingly simple objects have a far reaching impact. Drivers from Nebraska travel across the country and people unfamiliar with our state will form opinions about Nebraska based on a license plate with a boring, unadventurous design. This design is not in the true nature or spirit of our great state. Together, we can certainly find an alternative design that is both aesthetically appealing and cost effective, and most of all, one that reflects the true nature of the great state of Nebraska."

The license plates, which were supposed to commemorate Nebraska's 150th anniversary, were announced by Gov. Pete Ricketts via Twitter on March 22. The plates were immediately criticized nationwide due to confusion over the sower.
