Although no letters of interest were received to fill the vacant school treasurer position, Neligh-Oakdale has a new treasurer, pending a letter to the district stating she will serve.
That was one of several agenda items acted on during Monday's Board of Education meeting, which also included acknowledging second semester honor roll students.
The Board advertised the vacant treasurer position following the resignation of Deb Branstiter as long-time treasurer. Branstiter was named Antelope County treasurer Tuesday morning.
Board vice president Brad Higgins said during Monday meeting that after no letters of interest were received, he and president David Wright discussed appointing Erin Whitesel to serve as district treasurer.
Higgins said he spoke to Whitesel, of Neligh, who said she would be willing to serve the remainder of Branstiter’s term, which is December 2015.
At Neligh-Oakdale, the treasurer position is not filled by a board member and is not voted by the public. The position pays $100 per month and duties include reporting monthly status of district funds and maintaining accurate records.
The board originally asked for letters of interest from candidates, which were to be followed by public interviews during Monday’s meeting. Wright said the public interviews were what kept people from applying.
Board secretary Ryan Koinzan said he still wanted a letter of interest from Whitesel and said, “It would make me feel better.” Whitesel did not attend the meeting.
Koinzan said he wanted to still go through "the process" and ask for letters of interest from the public. Higgins asked him what the process would be since there was no policy in place to fill the position and asked how the board would choose “if there are 50 letters.”
Krista Schindler asked Higgins for Whitesel’s qualifications. Higgins said she formerly worked at a bank and is qualified for the position. Although not stated at the meeting, Whitesel has an associate’s degree in business management and currently serves as treasurer of the Neligh-Oakdale TeamMates Mentoring Program.
Following discussion, Schindler made a motion to appoint Whitesel, contingent on receiving a letter of interest. Higgins seconded the motion, which passed unanimously on a 6-0 roll call vote.
Not only must Whitesel submit a letter of interest, but she must be bonded within 10 days to serve as treasurer. The cost of the bond will be paid by the school district.
Neligh-Oakdale honor roll students were recognized, hot lunch prices were set and facility project updates were given Monday during the monthly Board of Education meeting.

Neligh-Oakdale’s breakfast and lunch prices will go up by 5-10 cents for 2015-16 but remain below the state averages/recommendation in most categories.

Milk: 45 cents (40 cents in 2014-15)
Lunch 7-12: $2.55 ($2.45)
Lunch K-6: $2.30 ($2.20)
Breakfast: $1.50 ($1.45)
Lunch Adult: $2.90 ($2.80)
Superintendent Kimberly Lingenfelter provided the board with an update on summer facility projects.
