Another Neligh resident has cashed in on the Neligh Chamber of Commerce's Business Bingo event.
Wendy Henn is Week 3's Business Bingo Winner. She received $100 in Neligh Big Bucks and is entered into the grand prize drawing of $1000. Henn was also the first Blackout winner. Assistant Economic Development Director Lauren Sheridan-Simonsen said bingo cards are available at various businesses throughout town, as well as the Chamber office along Highway 275 near the entrance to Riverside Park. Receipts should be taken to the Chamber office, where they will be validated. Participants will then draw for their space. She said $100 will be given away every week with a $1,000 grand prize drawing on Dec. 23. She said everything from city water bills and chiropractor receipts to haircuts and prescriptions are eligible as long as there is a receipt for at least $20 and the businesses is a Chamber member. The event will continue until December 23. You better watch out. You better not cry. You better not pout. Why? Santa Claus is coming to town!
The Neligh Public Library will have a special visitor coming all the way from the North Pole on Thursday, December 10. Santa Claus will be here to see what all the good little boys and girls want for Christmas this year. He will be at the library from 6-8 p.m. There will be supper, snacks and refreshments. Pictures will be taken by Nick Krohn and a free 4X6 photo will be available. There will be games, activities and crafts for kids as well. The Wolfpack girls and Warrior boys both remain undefeated following Tuesday's all-Antelope County matchup.
In the girls action, Elgin Public/Pope John dominated Neligh-Oakdale and stormed out to a 52-13 lead at the half and finished with a 66-20 victory. Three Wolfpack players scored double digits: Allyson Wemhoff put up 18 points, followed by Jenna Parks with 12 and Liz Selting with 11. In the boys game, the Wolfpack got off to a hot start and held a 14-5 advantage mid-way through the first quarter. Neligh-Oakdale coach Frank Gade called a timeout, and the Warriors responded with a 26-4 run to take control of the game. Neligh-Oakdale won 62-47. Juniors Grant White and Tyson Belitz each poured in 20 points for the Warriors. The Wolfpack was led by Kyle Kallhoff and Austin Meis with 11 points each.
Two road boss candidates -one who was given the job last week, and one who did not- both made an appearance at the Antelope County Supervisors meeting on Tuesday morning.
Dave Henery, one of the original applicants addressed the board about his qualifications asking why he was not chosen for the position. The board did not respond or take action on the matter. Later, Casey Dittrich, who was hired last week, was invited to the table to begin negotiations. Dittrich informed the board that he had already read the employee handbook, the supervisors handbook, and had begun the process of signing up for the training and testing for the Highway Superintendent's License, which will be held in April. The board began negotiations for Dittrich's job description and wage. It was agreed that he would receive the standard benefit package, and starting salary for the first 6 months would be $42,500. It was discussed that his salary should be more than the road employees. The board discussed that after 6 months they will evaluate him and should he meet expectations and have passed the superintendent's exam, he would be granted a raise. Dittrich brought to the board a list of expectations of himself and of the board. Each supervisor will also bring their expectations to the next supervisors meeting. Dittrich will begin his duties on Monday, January 4 and will meet with the board on the 5 to finish discussing his job responsibilities. The possible construction of a new track at Neligh-Oakdale monopolized most of Monday's Board of Education meeting from the opening of bids and the transfer of funds to patrons questioning the need for upgrading the track.
Boys track coach Rick Eickholt thanked the board for moving forward with the track project and announced both he and girls coach Terry Trautman are pledging $500 each for the project. According to bids opened Monday, the project would cost between $434,000 and $821,500, depending on drainage options and whether it was concrete or asphalt. Three companies submitted bids, and the board did not move forward with accepting any of the bids at this time. View the Track Bid Letting Request Interim Superintendent Bill Kuester told board members he recently transferred "$14,000 and some change" from an activities account to the Neligh Area Community Foundation for Neligh-Oakdale Track committee to assist with the expenses accrued with fundraising, such as postage, envelopes and letters. Several district stakeholders addressed concerns with the board on the track project and said other challenges should have a higher priority. Brian Frey asked the board for their five-year plan for the facility. Kuester said the district has spent funds on addressing code violations found by the Nebraska State Fire Marshal's Office. He also said that if the boilers stopped working, it would be a "sizeable" expense and the district "doesn't have the funds to that if we do sprinklers." Galen Furstenau said considering that statement, he has concerns on whether the district should commit to the track project at this time. Furstenau said his taxes to the school increased from 6 percent last year to 14 percent this year on one property. "On the HVAC with the boiler, the statement was made that there is not enough money to fix that. I think that comes before our track does," Furstenau said. He said Neligh-Oakdale increased its building budget by $1 million last year and another $500,000 this year. Furstenau said the bond election showed people wanted spending to decrease. "We'd have been better off if we would have passed the bond," Furstenau said. "That would have been $6 million. If we continue to spend a million and a half or more next year and each year, that's a lot of money." Neligh-Oakdale will be able to purchase more iPads for elementary children thanks to a $7,000 donation by a local family.
Galen and Debbie Furstenau donated the money through the Neligh-Oakdale Education Foundation and have earmarked it for the purchase of iPads. The Neligh-Oakdale Wrestling team had a 7th place finish Saturday at the Creighton Invitational meet.

Neligh-Oakdale and Elkhorn Valley split Friday night's all-Antelope County matchup with the Falcons taking the girls game and the Warriors winning the boys game.
In girls action, Elkhorn Valley won 49-34 in a physical battle. The Lady Falcons jumped out to a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased the margin to 34-14 by halftime. The second half scoring was nearly even, and the Warriors couldn't overcome the early deficit. In the boys game, the Warriors rolled to a 62-28 victory over the Falcons. N-O Junior Grant White led all scorers with 18 points. Eight other Warriors contributed to the balanced scoring attack: Tyson Belitz put up 10; Pepper Marchant 9; Alex Kerkman 7; Austin Rice and Nate Buck 6 each; and Cole Belitz, Chris Bentley and Clayton Anderson 2 each. "A solid win, coming of off the back to back," N-O Coach Frank Gade said. "I was disappointed in our offensive execution. That is an area we will need to improve in moving forward. I really liked our energy and our offensive rebounding has improved tremendously. Looking forward to next week and the constant grind." Tucker Hecht and Koby Smith led the Falcons with 9 points each, followed by Ezequiel Pena with 4, Dalton Smutney with 3, Emilio Sierra with 2, and Kalen Dittrich with 1. Elkhorn Valley will be in action again tomorrow night when they host Battle Creek, and Neligh-Oakdale will host Elgin Public/Pope John on Tuesday. The effort to raise money for a new track at Neligh-Oakdale just got off to a running start, thanks to its first donation in several years.
The Neligh Area Community Foundation for Neligh-Oakdale Track recently received its first contribution from Sarah Bates Brownell from Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The contribution was made in honor of her brother, Jordan Bates. Sarah is a member of the Neligh Oakdale Class of 2000. Jordan Bates won the all-class gold medal in the triple jump with a leap of 47-0 during the 2004 state track and field meet. The foundation is attempting to raise money to replace the track at Neligh-Oakdale. The Board of Education will meet Monday to open bids on the track project. The Neligh-Oakdale wrestling team opened their season with a second-place finish Thursday night at the DC West Quadrangular in Valley.

In girls varsity action, the Lady Warriors trailed Ewing by one after the first quarter of play, 11-10. Neligh-Oakdale put up another 10 points in the second, while holding the Lady Tigers to just 3 points for a 20-14 halftime lead. The teams traded points in the third, but the Lady Warriors held onto a 29-22 advantage heading into the final quarter. Some key 3-pointers by Ewing put them within one with less than 2 minutes to play. However, Neligh-Oakdale was able to force some turnovers late in the game and claimed a 40-36 victory. Neligh-Oakdale dominated early in the boys game, leading 21-6 after the first quarter and 52-17 at the half. All of the varsity boys got some playing time in this one as the Warriors continually cleared their bench, rotating several players at a time. A running clock started in the second half and Neligh-Oakdale earned a 68-21 win. "It was a good start to the year," Coach Frank Gade said. "I really liked our business-like approach last night." Ten Warriors put points on the board, led by Tyson Belitz with 16. Others scoring for the home team were Grant White with 14; Cole Belitz 11; Alex Kerkman 9; Clayton Anderson and Austin Rice each with 6; Damon Arehart, Chase Kallhoff and Chris Bentley each with 2; and Matthew Ervin with 1. The 1-0 Warrior teams will host Elkhorn Valley tonight, beginning with girls JV at 4 p.m. Quick thinking saved an RV tonight from a fire that potentially could have destroyed a woman’s home.
The Neligh Fire Department was called to an RV fire east of Neligh at about 6:50 p.m. tonight. The fire was contained by the time firefighters arrived. Michelle Littlefield, of Cadillac, Michigan, said she was trying to thaw the pipes of her RV. “It’s minimal, actually,” Littlefield said of the damage. “I grabbed my bag of laundry and drug it out here so it wouldn’t catch anything else on fire. When I realized I couldn’t contain it anymore, I ran to my neighbor for help.” Assistant Fire Chief Dave Jacobsen said there was minimal damage. "We found out from a resident that they were trying to thaw out pipes in the trailer and a paper towel caught on fire on the stove and dropped on some laundry," he said. "They were able to have it out by the time we got here." Two Neligh residents recently cashed in on the Neligh Chamber of Comerce's Business Bingo event.
This program rewards people for using local service and retail businesses. Every receipt for $20 or more spent at a Chamber business is worth a spot on a bingo card. Julie Tschirren won in the first week and Sara Allen won the second week. They each received $100 in Neligh Big Bucks and will be entered into a drawing for $1000 in Neligh Big Bucks. It was the red combine and tractor - not the guy in the red suit - that drew the largest lines Wednesday afternoon as Kayton International hosted its annual Kids Day event.
Children took advantage of tractor and combine rides, along with opportunities to drive pedal tractors. Santa Claus also made an appearance at the free event, which featured hot chocolate, popcorn and lots of prizes. The Neligh-Oakdale One Act team has clinched the District Title today in Stanton and is headed to the state competition.
Their production of "I'm Not Ebenezer Scrooge" landed them in the the top 5 in the NVC East Competition in Niobrara last month. Acting awards went to Matthew Ervin, Danae Smith, Bryce Frey, Kelsey Green and Austin Miller. They will perform their play at Johnny Carson Theater in Norfolk for the state championship on December 10 at 10:45 a.m. Kayton International is holding their second annual Kids Day event on Wednesday.
The event will be held at their location along Highway 275 and will go from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Children can take advantage of tractor and combine rides, along with opportunities to drive pedal tractors. Santa Claus will also make an appearance at the free event and snacks will also be provided. There will also be plenty of door prizes given away as well. Kayton International now has sales of 15% off toys in their store. By a slim 4-3 margin, Antelope County has hired its first road boss.
The Antelope County Supervisors hired Casey Dittrich of Tilden on Tuesday morning for the newly created position. Charlie Henery said his initial opinion was for the board to advertise and look for someone with more qualifications. "If we don't hire the right person, we'll be in worse shape," Henery said. After discussion of hiring a consulting firm should they continue their search, the board agreed that they need a personnel manager more than a highway superintendent. A motion was made by Greg Koinzan to hire Dittrich. During last month's interview, Dittrich said he has experience with managing people, budgeting and finances; however, he does not hold a superintendent's license or have experience working on roads or bridges. Koinzan suggested Dittrich be hired on a one-year trial basis, and the wage should reflect his experience. A second to the motion was made by Leroy Kerkman. The motion passed by a 4-3 vote. Supervisors voting against were Neil Williby, Jerry Schwager and Henery. The vote was tied at 3-3 until Merlin Bolling voted in favor and said he wanted "to give the young man a chance." Dittrich will be notified and the board will meet with him at the January 5 meeting where they will discuss wage, job description and expectations of the position. Although Neligh-Oakdale was already in Norfolk and only about 15 miles from where district one-act was to be held this morning, the competition in Stanton was just announced as being postponed.
No date has been set for when districts will now be held. Neligh-Oakdale will have a two-hour late start Tuesday due to the weather.
There will be no morning preschool and the buses will run accordingly. The One-Act team will leave for Stanton at its original time on Tuesday morning. In the heart of Neligh, a new Christmas display shines brightly in honor of a man who often displayed a big heart toward the community.
The new addition to the Antelope County Courthouse lights can be seen from Hwy 275 right beside the popular 13-car train in front of the courthouse that was donated by Bruce and Cindy Hild. This year, a pink pig stands next to the large display honoring the late Bruce Hild, who died unexpectedly last January. Jeri Anderson, an officer on the Neligh Chamber of Commerce and longtime business owner in Neligh, said the addition is special to the community. “We’re getting a plaque that says, 'Donated in the memory of Bruce Hild,' because he was very instrumental in this community," Anderson said. She said the pink pig is a perfect pick for honoring Hild, who was a life-time hog producer. “His license plate on his pickup said 'PIGS,' and he was always on the phone selling and buying pigs. That was his life; that was his nickname So that’s what we decided to get," she said. Hild was a long-time community leader who served on the Antelope County Healthcare Foundation, the Neligh-Oakdale Board of Education and was active with the Neligh Chamber of Commerce, among other community involvement. “Bruce and Cindy Hild are very instrumental in the community. All the years he was alive, he was involved in every community thing there was. He was there to help out,” Anderson said. “Anytime somebody needed help, he was there to help.”
Neligh-Oakdale will dismiss at 1 p.m. on Monday due to poor weather. West Ward will dismiss at 12:45 p.m. Buses will run accordingly.
Due to Monday's weather, Educational Service Unit 8 and Central Learning Center in Neligh is closed.
Neligh-Oakdale is still having school at regular time. |
