A grassfire early Sunday afternoon was quickly contained thanks to the rapid response of the Neligh Volunteer Fire Department.
The fire about 1 1/2 miles south of Neligh on Highway 275 began around 1 p.m. A witness said a spark from truck experiencing mechanical issues started the fire, but it took more than those passing by to put it out.
Firefighters were called with many trying to stomp out the fire with shovels until the grass rig and water could arrive. With shovels in hand, those first responders can be credited with keeping the fire contained to the ditch area and out of the nearby trees.
Also responding were the Antelope County Sheriff's Department and Neligh Rescue.
