Fire prevention week began after the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 and is celebrated every year on the week of October 9, the date the fire started.
That was one of the many facts third, fourth, fifth and sixth graders at Neligh-Oakdale learned in a presentation from the Neligh Fire Department on Wednesday. Firefighters Jason Krebs and Cris Kurpgeweit taught students facts about fire, proper actions during a fire and when to change smoke alarms. They also showed students various tools and gear that firefighters use during a fire.
The presentation was the first of fire prevention week in Neligh. On Thursday, the fire department will be giving tours of the fire station to West Ward students before doing the same with ESU students as well.
