Members of the Neligh-Oakdale FCCLA and other area organizations made sure that everyone is safe during the holiday car rides.
On October 28, a car seat check event was held at the Neligh Fire Department. This event was proudly sponsored by the Neligh-Oakdale FCCLA Chapter, Neligh Volunteer Fire Department, Antelope Memorial Hospital and Safe Kids North Central.
Agencies that were represented with nationally certified and trained car seat technicians were the Nebraska State Patrol, Antelope Memorial Hospital, West Holt Medical Services and Avera St. Anthony's Hospital.
At the event, 60 percent of the child seats checked were being used or installed incorrectly. Trained technicians were on site to answer questions and demonstrate the proper installation of child safety seats. All of the children that attended this safety event left safer than they arrived.
Child seats and booster seats save lives – offering the best protection for children in the event of a crash. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children one through 12 years of age. Failure to read and carefully follow the installation instructions included with the child seat as well as the vehicle owner’s manual can lead to incorrect installation, exposing young child passengers to serious injury or death in a crash.
Tragically many children are not protected at all. All children need to be properly secured every time they ride in a vehicle. Most crashes occur near home and can be violent, even at lower speeds. When used correctly, child safety seats can prevent injuries and save lives.
Safe Kids North Central is dedicated to the education and assistance of parents and caregivers with their child passenger safety needs. The goal is make sure that all children are secured properly, in appropriate child seats and that the child seats are installed properly-every trip, every time.
