Members of the Elgin United Methodist Church will host their annual fall dinner this weekend.
The dinner is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 14, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 110 N. 4th St. in Elgin. They will be serving turkey, ham and all of the fixings, including pie for dessert. The cost $12 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12 and free for children under age 6. A cash-n-carry bazaar will be available. The Emmy award-winning a cappella group, Tonic Sol-fa, will perform in Elgin on Wednesday, Oct. 24.
The concert is set to begin at 7 p.m. in the St. Boniface Auditorium, 209 Remington St. Tickets for all ages are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Advanced tickets may be purchased at Pope John, 402-843-5325. All proceeds will benefit the Pope John Music Department. The Elgin Public homecoming candidates and court have been announced. Coronation will be Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. in the EPS gym.
Candidates for king are Garet Behnk, Mateo Kirstine, Hunter Reestman and Slade Spangler. Queen candidates are Breanna Carr, Anna Heilhecker, Kaylee Martinsen, Leslie Nichols, Mary Nichols, Grace Rittscher, Allyson Wemhoff and Kira Widger. Elgin Public High School will kick off Homecoming Week with dress up days and snack days. Dress up days and snack days: Monday - Pajama Day and breakfast foods Tuesday - Hawaiian Day and juice boxes/pouches Wednesday - Class Decade Day - each class will choose a decade to represent and old-time candy Thursday - Class TV Show Day - each class will choose a TV show to represent/dress as characters from and cookies and popcorn Friday - Spirit Day - dress in red, black and silver and sports drinks Students in grades 9-12 will be awarded points for the percentage of class members dressed up each day. There will be lunchtime class competitions, a sidewalk chalk decorating contest and a poster contest as well. The winning high school class will be rewarded with a pizza party at the end of the week. The Wolfpack will play its Homecoming football game on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. against Osmond. A Homecoming dance and pizza party will follow for students of both Pope John and Elgin Public. Pope John XXIII Central Catholic High School will kick off Homecoming Week with the coronation of Homecoming Royalty on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. in St. Boniface Gym.
Queen candidates are Madison Schrage, daughter of Jerry and Tami Schrage of Raeville. Madison is a member of St. Bonaventure Parish and participates in one act, speech, musical, student council, Jr. Right-to-Life, National Honor Society and serves as a lector and EMHC. Her hobbies are playing board games, watching movies and painting. Madison's future plans are to major in elementary education at Wayne State College. Lauren Seier, daughter of Craig and Virginia Seier of Petersburg. Lauren is a member of St. Bonaventure Parish and participates in speech, one act, musical, FFA, National Honor Society, student council, Jr. Right-to-Life and serves as an EMHC and lector. Her hobbies include 4-H, baking, and dog shows. Lauren's future plans are to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and major in pre-vet. King candidates are Ervin Dohmen, son of Jeff and Angela Cuffe of Elgin. Ervin is a member of St. Boniface Parish and participates in football and liturgy group. His hobbies include playing and watching sports. Ervin's future plans are to major in sports media and communication at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. R. J. Lierman, son of Darryl and Julie Lierman of Elgin. R.J. is involved in football, basketball, FFA, student council, and liturgy group. His hobbies are playing and watching sports, playing video games, camping and fishing. His future plans are to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and major in computer science. Kyle Schumacher, son of Kevin and Lisa Schumacher of Petersburg. He is a member of St. John the Baptist and participates in football, basketball, FFA, student council, liturgy group and serves as an EMHC and lector. His hobbies include, playing and watching sports, fishing, going to the river, and binge watching Netflix. Kyle's future plans are to attend the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and major in agronomy or agribusiness. Following Sunday's coronation activities, students will host dress up days. Monday is Pajama Day, Tuesday is Nerd/Jock Day, Wednesday is Patriotic Day, Thursday is Prom Gone Wrong Day and Friday is Spirit Day. Other Homecoming events will include a scavenger hunt, treats for grade school and high school students, a corn hole tournament, game day and will conclude with a pep rally on Friday. The Wolfpack will play its Homecoming football game on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. against Osmond. A Homecoming dance and pizza party will follow for students of both Pope John and Elgin Public. Pope John XXIII and St. Boniface Catholic Schools in Elgin were recently awarded a grant for $500 from Elkhorn Rural Public Power District Community Development Fund. The funds will be used to purchase an AED machine for school.
An AED is a lightweight, battery-operated, portable device that checks the heart's rhythm and sends a shock to the heart to restore a normal rhythm. The device is used to help people having sudden cardiac arrest. U.S. Bank® and the Nebraska School Activities Association are proud to announce the 2018-19 local school winners of the Believers and Achievers award. Every member school is able to submit two senior students for recognition in this awards program.

The Elgin FFA Chapter will hold a hired hand auction on the football field following Friday's game in Elgin.
Ted Baum will serve as the auctioneer for the annual labor auction. Buyers will purchase members for 8 hours of work and checks should be made out to Nebraska FFA Foundation. The money will support chapter activities and student leadership. If you are unable to attend, but would like to leave a bid, contact Julia Schwartz at 402-843-2455. The Elgin Ko-Ed group (EKG) will host a tailgate party and Big Red Sam Husker Piano Show on Saturday, Sept. 22 in the Elgin Fire Hall.
The fun will begin at 11 a.m. with the Husker football game. Attendance is free, but a cash bar, bloody Mary bar and pork sandwich meals will be offered. Following the game, Big Red Sam will get the crowd involved in his interactive, comedy piano show. This year's tailgate proceeds will go towards EKG's community beautification efforts, such as lighting and pots to accentuate mainstreet. |
